Tomorrow, Sunday, February 26, the Anglican Church of Canada's full communion partner the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) celebrates Diaconal Sunday.
Diaconal Sunday is a designated Sunday in the church year when our Lutheran siblings in Christ highlight the importance of Christian witness expressed through service (diakonia). It is also a day to recognize and give thanks to God for all who serve in official calls as deacons in their church.
In and through baptism, all Christians are called to loving service (diakonia) in response to human need and the needs of our fellow creatures on this planet as well.
Perhaps next year the Anglican Church of Canada should join with the ELCIC in celebrating Diaconal Sunday! It would be a wonderful way for Anglicans across Canada to recognize our collective call to diakonia as Christians and celebrate the important work done being done by Anglican deacons too, while simultaneously affirming the close relationship between our two churches.
In the meantime, if you would like to see the materials the ELCIC has prepared to mark Diaconal Sunday tomorrow, they are available for download below. They include a bible study, an information sheet on diaconal ministry, and a resource sheet.
